Territorial Wars

Further information on unique Admin-moderated war types.

Introduction

Territorial wars are a unique system on United Lands that allows a new depth of complexity not possible with automated systems. These moderated conflicts allow for truly unique and engaging conflicts that have real impact on the server further than just taking money.

When done correctly, territorial wars can exchange land, raze cities, enforce reparations, or demilitarise nations. Use these tools wisely to craft a genuine geopolitical experience.

The Process

Territorial wars are a lengthy process, follow this brief guide to ensure you're well prepared.

1

Eligibility

Ensure that both you and your target are valid targets for territorial wars. Generally this is determined by an opt in toggle, /t toggle territorialwars, however some circumstances might also make you a valid target.

A town with territorial wars enabled will have a label displayed in their /t screen.
2

Declaration Ticket

To begin the process, you must first open a declaration of war ticket on Discord. This will open a ticket with only Admins where you can freely discuss the terms of the war (If your declaration concerns a nation that an Admin is affiliated with, you can direct message Litning11 on Discord).

In this ticket, you must present the following, in addition to some basic information:

  • A valid cause of war, why you are declaring on the specified town or nation.

  • The terms you want to enforce in the result of a victory or concede in a loss.

Upon creating a declaration of war ticket, the Admin team will work with you to create a comprehensive agreement outlining what terms will be enforced in the result of a victory and a loss, these will be fair and reasonable. Generally, the agreement will include an attackers' penalty, which means the cost of losing a war you started is more severe.

  • Fair means that the reward won is proportional to the victory and does not leave the losing side in impossible situations. The terms might be adjusted slightly depending on the totality of the victory/loss. Narrower scores might give less than wider gaps.

  • Reasonable wars mean that their purpose is logical, you generally cannot annex an entire large nation in one war or take territory from the middle of somewhere without any prior links. The terms enforced must also be related to the justification. You cannot annex towns if your goal was their independence.

Ensure that you open a war declaration at least a few days before you intend to start the war. Discussions take a long time.

Declaration of war tickets can be found under the 'support' section.

Discussions

Once the attacking side is happy with the proposal, the Staff team then create a second ticket with the defenders. This is to start the negotiation process again with their input to ensure it is fair for all. This does not always happen, sometimes a territorial war can be greenlighted without the defenders knowing at all - but this is rare and generally means the terms are not severe.

Finally, the finished proposal is given to both sides for one last agreement. Once that is done, the attackers have the go-ahead to declare when they are ready. This allows them to keep the element of surprise somewhat as the defenders will not know when exactly the war will start.

4

Fight

There is nothing different during the actual combat phase of the war. Fight as you would normally, and once one side has won the peace deal will begin.

5

Peace Treaty

Upon the conclusion of the war, either naturally or via a surrender, a peace treaty ticket should be made. Here will be where discussions surrounding fulfilment of the terms, with a timeline put in place.

Features

💰 Rewards

The risk of territorial wars are high, but the rewards are even higher. In addition to the potential boon of winning such a battle, you also receive:

  • 20% upkeep reduction for your town.

⚖️ Bilateral Treaties

Wars do not have to end in complete and total victory. If you wish to end the war soon or have reached a stalemate, you can negotiate with your enemy to both exchange terms.

Examples

Eligibility

Generally, territorial wars can only be started by two consenting parties (through the use of toggles). But some situations may result in a full or partial participation of a territorial war even if not opted in.

If this occurs, do not be surprised, as it usually means you've done something bad enough to be the target of such a war. We will not allow declarations on completely innocent towns or nations.

Below are some examples of situations that might find you in a territorial war:

  • Geopolitical incidents. You've likely not fulfilled your end of a deal and now the partner is coming for what they're owed.

  • Member of a nation with territorial wars enabled. If your capital town has territorial wars enabled, this covers the whole nation. However, the Staff team will do their best to lessen the penalties on uninvolved towns.

📜 Valid War Justifications

Territorial wars must have a valid and logical justification for war. Examples of these can be, but are not limited to:

  • Annexation of border regions or strategic areas.

  • Enforcing the independence of towns within the nation.

  • Breaking of alliances or international organisations.

  • Enforcing reparations over unfulfilled deals (for example, mercenary contracts).

  • Ideological differences or breakdown in relations.

Justifications that we do not accept can be, but are not limited to:

  • Interpersonal relations (i.e. you don't like the person in charge, but nothing about the relationship between your nations).

  • Your opponent is losing a war and you want to take a piece.

  • You want to raid their storage room.

✒️ Terms

The terms you can enforce, or be subject to, are technically limitless. Below are some common treaties, but you are free to propose anything:

  • Reparations of money and/or items, in lump sum or instalments.

  • Land, either as temporary occupation or complete annexation.

  • Entire towns*.

  • Change in ideology, government, and/or leadership.

  • Lifting of sanctions or enforcing favourable trade deals.

  • Foreign policy changes, annulling alliances, or dissolving organisations.

  • Demilitarisation: dismantling forts and/or surrendering armaments.

*It is currently not possible to annex towns completely yet. This will become available once independence or liberation war goals are added.
