# Traders

## Introduction

The economy on United Lands is split up into two main categories: NPC-driven and player-driven. Both are equally important to the server and you can make a living using only one, but a mixture of both is recommended.

Traders are NPC towns located around the map which buy or sell certain items.

### Tutorial

We offer a comprehensive trading tutorial in-game at spawn, but if you need a quick reference, see below:

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Going to a Trade Point

First, use the table above or a warp menu to find the traders you want. Go to markets that want what you have a lot of.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Picking up an Order

Approach a lectern and right-click. Here you will see a few key bits of information:

* **Requested Items**: What the trader wants, from a minimum to a maximum amount you can turn in.
* **Time Limit**: How long you have to fulfil this order.
* **Penalty**: If you fail to return the requested items in the time limit, how much money and reputation you will lose.

Once you're happy with the order, accept it from the menu **and keep the book.**

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Gather Your Items

Here's the easy part: Go and collect what the trader wants, you can turn in the order once you meet the minimum amount of items required - but turning in excess will give more money. So try to bring as much as you can.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Return to the Trader

Once you have everything you want to sell, return to the trader you picked up the order from. Have all the items you wish to sell in your inventory ready, and **right-click the chest next to the lectern** whilst holding the trade order book to deposit the materials.

Outside of the main mechanics, below are a few more key bits of information you should know:

📊 Trader Requirements

Every major trade market will have traders with no requirements, but most ask you meet some minimum levels before they consider you a worthy trade partner:

* [Job Leve](/economy/jobs.md)l: Increase your job level by performing actions related to this job. Higher level trades usually require a higher job level.
* Reputation: Some traders need to like you more before giving you important trade deals. Continue trading with them, or perform other friendly actions, to increase their opinion of you. Check your reputation with `/opinion`.

<details>

⚖️ Bartering

Some traders prefer bartering over buying, meaning they want to trade items for items rather than money. They work like regular traders, but instead of money, you will receive the item(s) seen in the trade order as payment.

Opinion bonuses start at +50 reputation, and can grow up to +50% extra money at reputation level +100.
